Biotherapeutic Drainage Therapy (UNDA Numbers)
Drainage is a therapy that address healing on a cellular level. The purpose of this is to help the body open its emunctories (the organs of elimination such as the kidneys), so it can more effectively metabolize and excrete toxins. Cellular toxicity from food sensitivities, environmental allergens and heavy metals are a common cause of chronic disease and drainage is a very effective way to address the underlying cause without interacting with any medications.
Emotional Freedom Technique
This form of energetic medicine was developed by Gary Craig and uses the tapping of acupressure points while saying affirmations to help remap you emotions and relieve both physical and emotional pain. This has been known to treat mental-emotional issues such as depression and anxiety, as well as physical ailments such as allergies and chronic pain.
In a post-industrial revolution era, it is difficult to avoid all toxic chemicals in our food, air and water. Environmental medicine focuses on helping the body become more efficient in naturally detoxing from these daily chemical exposures. This type of medicine focuses on heavy metal detoxification, solvent detoxification, chemical sensitivities/exposures and general whole health support of the body's natural detox mechanisms.
Whether your husband has a cough, or your kids have a rash, naturopathic care can help! We provide a general family practice which means we can provide annual physicals, routine blood work, school/sport physicals and imaging referrals like mammography and colonoscopies. We do not currently see children under age 3 and are not equipped to do well-child exams other than school/sports physicals.
Herbal Medicine & Botanicals
Natural botanicals provide excellent therapeutic treatment and tend to have far less side-effects than pharmaceuticals. They often help support many systems at once where many pharmaceuticals primary focus on one system. Herbs are a powerful medicine and there are many interactions with common medications, which is why it is best not to take any herbal preparations without the guidance of a naturopathic doctor who is familiar with all of the potential drug-herb interactions. Gemmo therapy and flower essences are other aspects of botanical commonly used at Bare Medicine to address acute and chronic conditions on both a physical and emotional level.
Homeopathy is an energetic medicine customized to each patient. The correct remedy is made by getting your whole picture - body, mind and spirit with both acute and chronic symptoms. It uses vibrational energetics to help aid you in your healing crisis. Cell salts are another form of homeopathy and may also be used in your treatment.
Perhaps one of the oldest and most effective types of therapy, hydrotherapy is any treatment using water as your therapeutic source. There are many different ways of doing hydrotherapy and it is one form of therapy that easy to do yourself at home.
Intramuscular injections, the most common being vitamin B injections, are yet another way to get nutrients into the body in a more absorptive way. Going into the muscle allows us to completely bypass the stomach and GI tract, and provides an excellent way to get B vitamins into those who have trouble absorbing anything taken orally, or those who are severely deficient.
Kinesiotaping is a form of supportive taping that can help the body retrain how to function properly. The tape is a stretchy tape, used to hold the fascia (connective tissue between the skin and muscle layers) in a certain way to provide therapeutic effects. This tape usually stays on the area for 3-4 days and is a form of physical therapy, or sports medicine. This therapy is a great option for sprains/strains and other acute injuries, as well as chronic aches and pains.
Bare Medicine is equipped to do many laboratory tests including urine tests, pregnancy tests, Strep throat tests, occult blood smears (blood in the stool), vaginal and skin preparations (to look for fungal or bacterial infections), various blood tests, Lyme disease and co-infection testing, cultures and much more.
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT, aka "cold laser")
Laser therapy is a safe an effective way to treat almost anything such as acute and chronic pain/injuries, uterine fibroids, adhesions or scarring from surgeries/wounds, diabetic ulcers, lymphedema, carpal tunnel, shingles, Herpes simplex, tinnitus, sinusitis and more. Check out our brochure for more information.
Lyme Literate Doctor
Dr. McElveen is a Lyme literate naturopathic doctor, meaning she stays up to date on all treatments, research and testing regarding Lyme Disease and its potential co-infections. Dr. McElveen uses both natural and pharmaceutical treatments for tick-borne illnesses, depending on what the patient needs and responds to. For more information on Lyme Disease and Lyme literate doctors, feel free to check out the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS).
Microcurrent Point Stimulation Therapy (MPS)
Microcurrent point stimulation therapy combines principles of acupuncture and the technology of microcurrent to help address chronic pain without the need for medication. This type of microcurrent stimulates specific acupuncture and nerve points (with microcurrent rather than needles) to help release beta-endorphins, the body's natural pain killers. This modality works very well for chronic pain, insomnia and more and can potentially reduce or stop the need for pain medication. For more information, check out the FAQs. ***Please understand that Dr. McElveen is not an acupuncturist, but is simply using some of the same points used in acupuncture
Minor Office Procedures
Naturopathic Doctors are trained to do minor office procedures involving the fat and skin layers of the body. This includes the excision of cysts, abscess incision and drainage, mole/wart removal, skin tag removal, biopsies and more. At Bare Medicine, we currently perform simple skin tag and wart/mole removal either surgically or by using cryotherapy (freezing with liquid nitrogen). These procedures usually take only minutes and may also use local anesthetic.
Neural (Segmental) Therapy/Trigger Point Injections
Segmental therapy, as used by Deitrich Kilinghardt, MD, uses a local anesthetic and/or homeopathic preparations injected just under the skin in several "bubbles" around the area that is causing you pain. This not only can cause immediate pain relief, but it can also reset your pain receptors at a local level to reduce pain in the future. If the pain is due to trigger points or "knots" in the muscle, we may inject those points as well. This therapy may also be used for improving organ function as well.
Supplements can be a wonderful aid to kick your health back into gear. We are firm believers that we should get as much from our diet and lifestyle as possible, but that is not always available, or can be difficult to stick to in today's busy lifestyles. This is where supplements come in. When needed, we only recommend the highest quality supplements available that have been tested by third-parties so that we know what is on the label is in the bottle. With very little regulation on supplements, it is very easy to get a dirty product online or in mainstream stores, so we provide supplement lines that are only sold to licensed doctors. Order high-quality, pharmaceutical-grade supplements from our virtual dispensary.
Many health issues can be prevented by good nutrition. However, most people never get the proper training on how and why we eat. It is not only to fuel our bodies, but also to keep our systems in prime working order so infection and illness cannot invade. This treatment includes nutritional plans for weight loss, food allergies and alleviating symptoms of chronic disease.
Physical medicine is widely used in our profession. We have been trained in naturopathic manipulation, similar to that of a chiropractor. Other options for offered at Bare Medicine include orthobiotomy, therapeutic massage and low level laser therapy (LLLT).
Bare Medicine can help women of all ages for anything from irregular periods and menopause to yeast infections and birth control options. Dr. McElveen is not a midwife and does not treat pregnancy, but she can help with nutritional needs of the pre- and postnatal mother. Services offered include vaginal exams (though we are no longer offering PAP smears), breast exams, HIV testing, pregnancy testing and more.
